SUMBA IVORY MARRIAGE BANGLE. This is certainly the largest Ivory Sumba bangle I have ever seen. It weights 289.5g, it is 9.85cm across and 4.32cm thick. This splendid bangle from the Lesser Sunda Islands in East Sumba, eastern Indonesia, has a superb, honeyed patina ,with traditional carvings .Such bracelets were classified as ‘female goods’ and were presented by the bride’s family to the groom’s family. Other ‘female goods’ such as textiles, porcelain and beadwork were given with the bracelets. A bracelet/bangle of this size and quality is rarely seen .
