For sale is an opal replacement belemnite fossil, from Coober Pedy, S.Aust. The mines have occasionally produced opal replaced fossils. These fossils are Early Cretaceous in age, or approximately 135 million years old, and were among the first fossils found in Australia. Sorry the pics are not great, it just would not go right. The belemnite is completely replaced by quite transparent golden gemmy opal. As far as I know this location is the only place in the world that finds the replacement agent for the belemnite is opal. This was mined pre 1980.This is a very presentable size peice. Ex Jack Schlittler collection.
